IL PENITENTE
Il pesante odore di legno ammuffito e di acero umido gli aveva ormai assuefatto le narici.
Intorno a sé il chiacchiericcio delle persone era diventato una litania disordinata e senza filo logico.
I suoi piedi, appoggiati sul pavimento appiccicoso, rovinato dalla quantità di birra rovesciata dai clienti, faceva da sfondo alla sua solitudine e alla sua malinconia.
Non era un bel periodo per Casey O’Connell, la sua vita, così media e superficiale, era arrivata al capolinea.
Una sola cosa rendeva felici le sue giornate e il suo umore: il bere.
Ma era una felicità passeggera, una leggerezza fittizia, dovuta al fatto che il bere permetteva a Casey di non pensare ai suoi problemi.
Il suo sguardo, fisso su quel liquido ambrato e la sua mano, intenta ad afferrare il bicchiere di cristallo, erano la fotografia della pessima condizione nella quale verteva la sua vita.
Per quanto tempo avrebbe dovuto soffrire per tornare alla normalità?
Cosa avrebbe dovuto fare per uscirne?
Le domande gli balenavano continuamente in mente.
Mai una risposta alle tante domande.
Dove sarebbe finito?
Chi avrebbe dovuto chiamare per avere un aiuto?
Si fermò a quella domanda, la sua gola era secca, i suoi occhi lucidi.
Sorseggiò l’ultimo goccio di whiskey e salutò, erano ormai le 2.30 di mattina e c’era tempo per bere l’ultimo drink in un altro locale.
